Stud Hi/Lo Rules

Here are the rules for Stud Hi/Lo.

- Objective
- Cards Dealt
- Betting
- Hand Values

Objective :-

The objective for Stud Hi/Lo is to make the best 5 card hand from your 7 cards. There is a high and low pot in this game. You can make a hand for each pot from your 7 cards.

Cards Dealt :-

Before any cards are dealt in Stud Hi/Lo all players must pay an ante. The ante will be 10% of the small blind. So in a $10/$20 game ante's are $1. Dealing goes to the left 1 card a time. Players are dealt 3 cards. 2 face down and 1 showing.

Betting.

(4th Street) Another face up card is dealt to all players still in the hand.

More betting.

(5th Street) Another face up card is dealt to all players still in the hand.

More betting.

(6th Street) Another face up card is dealt to all players still in the hand.

More betting.

(River) Another face down card is dealt to all players still in the hand.

Final betting.

Betting :-

Betting in Stud Hi/Lo follows a unique set of rules as follows:

Ante's must be paid before players are dealt any cards. This will be 10% of the SB. Blinds are then paid and dealing begins.

Round 1 - After the first 3 cards are dealt the player with the lowest showing card (the bring-in) will be the first to bet. In the event of a tie suit values are considered. In stud from highest to lowest these are: Club, Diamond, Heart, Spade. The 'bring-in' will have the choice to bet the bring-in amount (varies per game) OR the small blind amount. If they do not pay either of these then they must fold their hand. Betting continues left and the bet and raise size if fixed at the small blind for this round.

Round 2 - Betting on 4th street begins with the player with the highest showing pair or card. If the player opening is showing a pair they can choose to bet at the BB limit, after which all raises will be fixed at this limit for the round. If there are no pairs showing then the betting limit will be the SB limit for this round. There is no bring in for this or the remaining rounds so the first to bet can choose to check from this point onwards.

Round 3 - Betting on 5th street begins with the player showing the highest value hand. Betting from this round onwards is set at the BB limit. All bets and raises must be this amount.

Round 4 - See Round 3.

Round 5 - See Round 3.

Hand Values :-

High Pot

Royal Flush - (A K Q J 10 of the same suit)
Straight Flush - ( 5 running cards of the same suit e.g. 4 5 6 7 8 of spades)
Quads - (4 of the same card e.g. 8 8 8 8 ... this can also be called 4 of a kind)
Full House - (Trips and a pair e.g. Q Q Q A A or 3 3 3 7 7)
Flush - (5 cards of the same suit)
Straight - (5 running cards e.g. 6 7 8 9 10)
Trips - (3 of the same card e.g. 6 6 6 or 5 5 5)
2 Pair
1 Pair

Kickers are used in the event of a tie.

Low Pot

o win with the best low hand I will list from highest the lowest the winning hand order. Ace is the lowest card in the low pot and does not count as a high card. Flush and straight is irrelevant when deciding who wins as they don't factor into it at all.

As a general rule the hands are named by their highest card. If the highest card was a 6, it would be called 6 low, etc. This will help determining the winner. If both highest cards are the same then the second highest plays until you have a winner.

1. A 2 3 4 5 (also known as 'the wheel' or 'the nuts')
2. A 2 3 4 6
3. 2 3 4 5 6
4. A 5 6 7 9
5. 3 5 6 7 9
6. 5 6 7 8 9
7. 7 T J Q K
8. 9 T J Q K
9. 8 9 T A A
10. 5 6 7 2 2
11. 2 3 4 Q Q
12. 6 6 4 4 4

This is a representation of how hands would be ranked by order. As you can see any unpaired hands beats a hand with pairs. It plays like regular poker in reverse for the most part. Remember the Ace is the lowest card not the highest.

5 Card Draw Rules

Here are the rules for 5 Card Draw.

- Objective
- Cards Dealt
- Betting
- Hand Values

Objective :-

The objective in 5 card draw is to make the best hand using your 5 cards.

Cards Dealt :-

Once the small and big blind has been paid.. Each player is dealt 5 cards face down at the beginning of the game.

Betting.

Discard and draw cards equal to amount discarded.

Betting.

Hands are shown and the winner is decided.

Betting :-

There are only 2 rounds of betting in 5 card draw, making this probably the easiest type of poker to play from a learning point of view.

Round 1: The player to the left of the big blind is the first to bet, he can raise, check or fold his hand. Betting then continues to the left until everyone is satisfied.

Round 2: After the discard and draw the second round of betting commences, starting with the small blind (or whoever is left of the button if the small blind folded). Betting continues left until everyone is satisfied.

Hand Values :-

If 2 players have the same hand then the pot is split. Suit is not a factor in 5 card draw.

Razz Rules

Here are the rules for Razz.

- Objective
- Cards Dealt
- Betting
- Hand Values

Objective :-

The objective in Razz is to win with the best low hand. See Hand Values.

Cards Dealt :-

Dealing in Razz is the same as 7 Card Stud. The ante amount varies per game however.

See: 7 Card Stud Rules.

Betting :-

Betting in Razz follows the same rules as 7 Card Stud also. The bring in is the person with the highest showing card.

See: 7 Card Stud Rules.

Hand Values :-

Since the objective of Razz is to win with the best low hand I will list from highest the lowest the winning hand order. Ace is the lowest card in Razz and does not count as a high card. Flush and straight is irrelevant when deciding who wins as they don't factor into Razz at all.

Omaha High Rules

Here are the rules for Omaha High.

- Objective
- Cards Dealt
- Betting
- Hand Values

Objective :-

The objective in Omaha High is to make a 5 card hand using your 2 hole cards and the 5 on the board. You MUST use 2 of your hole cards to make your hand, meaning you can only use 3 of the community cards.

Cards Dealt :-

Each player at the table is dealt 4 cards before the first round of betting. Deal the small blind first and continue left until everyone has their cards.

Betting.

Burn a card and the Flop is then dealt to the board.

More betting.

Burn and deal Turn card.

More betting.

Burn and deal River card.

Final betting.

Betting :-

Betting structure in Omaha High is the same as Texas Hold'Em Poker. You can see how the betting occurs above. However Omaha High has some special rules for the size and numberof bets allowed. They are as follows:

Round 1 - Round 1 of betting is played at the lower of the 2 blinds. If they were $10/$20 bets would be $10 only and a maximum of 4 raises is allowed. Making the maximum total bet for any round 1 at 4x SB or in this case $40.

Round 2 - Same as round one concerning the special rules. SB bet sizes only and a maximum of 4 raises.

Round 3 - After the turn card is dealt the betting changes. The bet size is the big blind then. In our example it would be $20 with a maximum of 4 raises. So the max bet size for round 3 is $80 in our example or 4x BB.

Round 4 - The final round of betting follows the same rules as round 3. 4 raises maximum at the BB size.

Hand Values :-

Pretty much exactly the same as Texas Hold'Em values. The idea in Omaha High is to win with the best hand using 2 of your hole cards. You MUST use 2 hole cards to make your hand.

Omaha Hi/Lo Rules

Here are the rules for Omaha Hi/Lo.

- Objective
- Cards Dealt
- Betting
- Hand Values

Objective :-

Omaha Hi/Lo has 2 objectives. A high and low pot. Unlike some other types of poker you MUST use 2 of your hole cards to win in Omaha Hi/Lo. Meaning you can only use 3 of the community cards to make your hand(s).

High Pot - The high pot plays like regular poker games. The person with the best hand will win this.

Low Pot - To enter the low pot you must have 5 cards 8 and below. Check out the Hand Values section to see how to win.

Betting :-

Betting structure in Omaha Hi/Lo is the same as Texas Hold'Em Poker. You can see how the betting occurs above. However Omaha Hi/Lo has some special rules for the size and number of bets allowed.

The total pot is split in half. Half going to the High pot winner and half to the low pot winner.

This will be divided into 2 sections as the 2 objectives follow different rules.
For both pots a player MUST use 2 hole cards to make their hand. You can use different hole cards or the same hole cards to make both hands.

Low pot

The low pot can only be won if a player has 5 non-paired cards 8 or below. If nobody has this the winner of the high pot will take the entire pot. Straights and flushes also do not count when concerned with the low pot.

A 2 3 4 5 - This is the best hand for the low pot.

All other hands are considered based on your highest low card. For example A 2 3 4 8 would not beat 2 3 4 5 7.

If both players have the same high card then the second highest card is taken into account. E.g. A 2 4 5 7 and A 2 3 4 7. The second player would win in this scenario.

Texas Hold'Em Rules

Alright I'm going to kick off the blog with my favourite type of poker.
Texas Hold'Em.

First thing you need to know is the rules, so here they are in the following order:

- Objective
- Cards Dealt
- Betting
- Hand Values

Objective :-

The objective in Texas Hold'Em Poker is to make a 5 card hand using your 2 hole cards and the 5 on the board. You can make a 5 card hand with your 2 hole cards and 3 community cards, 1 hole card and 4 community cards or in rare cases you can use all 5 community cards (this will usually result in a split pot).

Cards Dealt :-

In Texas Hold'Em everyone at the table is dealt 2 cards. Starting from the person left of the dealer deal 1 card and then repeating the cycle for the second card. If you have a dedicated dealer the person with the small blind is dealt first. The game then begins.

Betting ensues.

Next you burn one card and then deal 3 community cards (the flop) face up for everyone to see.

More betting.

Burn another card and deal out 1 more card (the turn) onto the table for the community cards.

Another round of betting.

Burn another card and deal the final community card (the river) to the table.

The final round of betting then commences and the winner is decided.

Betting :-

Betting for this game follows most standard betting policies for poker.

Round 1 - The first round of betting begins with the person left of the big blind and follows around the table left. Players can reraise, call or fold. You cannot bet again if it gets back around to you and everybody folds. This triggers the next card(s) to be dealt.

Round 2 - This occurs after the flop. If everyone called and nobody bet the small blind is first to bet in this round of betting. However if one or more people made a raise in the first round then the last person to make a raise will be the first to act (bet).

Round 3 - This occurs after the turn card. The small blind is first to bet if nobody has raised yet, otherwise the last person who raised will be the first to act. Same as Round 2 of the betting.

Round 4 - This occurs after the river card. This is the final round of betting after which you are expected to turn over your cards and show what you had. The rules for who bets first are the same as Rounds 2 & 3.

Hand Values :-

I will list the winning hands here in descending order. Meaning the best hand will be listed first.

6 6 6 or 5 5 5)
2 Pair
1 Pair

If none of these are met Ace is the highest card in the deck descending in order down to 2. The person with the highest card is the winner in these cases.

Additionally if you have the same hand as another player, the one with the higher value of that hand is the winner. Or if you have to exact same hand then the game will use what is called a kicker.

A kicker is the highest card that is not used to make your hand. For example if you had A 5 in your hand and the board was 5 5 7 10 8 and your opponent had Q 5 in their hand you would both have trip 5's. The kicker for you would be the Ace whereas your opponent would only have the Queen. You would win.

If however you had 2 5 in your hand and your opponent had 3 5 then you would split the pot. Why? Because the highest card that isn't used is a 10 which is on the board and would count for both of you.

And that concludes the rules for Texas Hold'Em Poker. If you are confused about some of the terms used here be sure to look out for my section on common terminology of poker.
